Etsy Alt Text for Digital Products: Useful Examples Without Keyword Stuffing

October 7, 20268 min readAlice Boone

Alt text is one of those tiny listing fields that carries a surprisingly human responsibility. It describes an image for someone who cannot see it. Done well, it also gives search engines useful context. Done badly, it becomes a stiff pile of keywords that helps nobody.

Quick take

  • Etsy lets English-language shops add a description to each listing image and recommends keeping it concise—up to 250 characters.
  • Describe what the image communicates: the product, important visual details, scale, text, and context.
  • Do not paste the listing title or a tag cloud into every image description.

She writes about the awkward middle of creator work: the part between having a good idea and getting a clear, trustworthy product out the door.

Why trust this guide

I checked Etsy's current alt-text guidance and Google's image SEO documentation on October 7, 2026. The examples below are written for common digital-product image types and prioritize accessibility first.

Founder disclosure: I founded EverAlice AI. Smart Resize and Mockup Studio are linked because they help produce consistent listing images, but the alt text examples and accessibility guidance stand on their own.

Describe the image someone would otherwise miss

Good alt text is not a second description field. It is a compact replacement for the visual information in one specific image. Name the product, then add the details that matter in that frame: color, composition, setting, visible text, included sizes, or the relationship between objects.

If the image is decorative and adds no information, repetition may be worse than restraint. But Etsy listing images usually have a sales job, so most deserve a distinct description. A hero mockup, a file-format slide, and a size chart should not all receive the same text.

Examples for common digital-product images

Hero mockup: “Neutral beige weekly planner displayed on a tablet beside a stylus and coffee cup.” Printable wall art: “Set of three botanical line-art prints in oak frames above a green sofa.” Template preview: “Editable wedding invitation template with black serif type and a cream floral border.”

Information slide: “Five included printable wall-art ratios listed beside small previews of the abstract blue artwork.” Detail image: “Close view of watercolor paper texture and soft blue brushwork in the printable design.” Each example explains that image instead of trying to rank for every product phrase.

Include visible words only when they matter

If an image contains a short headline such as “5 ratios included,” include that meaning. You do not need to transcribe a dense instruction sheet word for word. Summarize the purpose and put the full instructions in the listing description or buyer guide where they are easier to read.

Avoid openings such as “image of” unless the wording prevents confusion. Screen-reader users already know they encountered an image. Start with the useful subject: “Pink birthday invitation…” is cleaner than “Image of a pink birthday invitation…”

Why keyword stuffing fails twice

Etsy says adding the shop name, title, tags, or other existing attributes to alt text does not provide an extra SEO benefit. Google likewise warns against filling alt attributes with keywords. More importantly, a tag cloud is frustrating to hear through a screen reader.

One natural product phrase is fine when it accurately names the item. The problem is repetition without visual meaning. “Printable planner digital planner ADHD planner PDF planner” is not an image description. “Undated daily planner page with three priority boxes and an hourly schedule” is.

Create the image sequence and alt text together

The easiest time to write alt text is when you decide what each image needs to prove. Give the gallery a sequence—identify, show contents, demonstrate detail, explain size, clarify use—then write one sentence for each job. This also exposes duplicate images that are taking space without answering a new buyer question.

If you create images in batches, EverAlice Smart Resize can help keep crops consistent, and Mockup Studio can help create the contexts. The final description should still come from what is actually visible in each finished image.

Bottom line

Write alt text as a useful stand-in for the image. Describe what matters, keep it concise, and let the listing title and tags do their own jobs.
