The Etsy 20MB Digital Download Limit: What Fits and How to Package Larger Products

August 18, 20269 min readAlice Boone

You finish the product, export the files, and then Etsy tells you the ZIP is too large. This is the exact moment a tidy creative project can turn into a folder full of FINAL-final-smaller-2 files. The limit is real, but the answer is not crushing everything until the artwork looks tired.

Quick take

  • Etsy currently allows up to five files on an instant-download listing, with a maximum of 20MB per file.
  • Five 20MB slots do not behave like one 100MB upload; each individual file must stay under the limit.
  • ZIP files organize a delivery beautifully, but they do not dramatically shrink JPEGs, PNGs, or other files that are already compressed.
  • Separate customer-ready files from editable source files and seller-only assets before you start compressing.

Why trust this guide

The upload limit comes from Etsy's current digital-listing documentation, checked August 18, 2026. The packaging patterns are based on common digital-product file behavior and my UX rule that buyers should understand the download without needing to message the seller.

Founder disclosure: I founded EverAlice AI, whose Magic Lister can build delivery ZIPs as part of a listing workflow. I still recommend inspecting every generated package before you upload it because filenames, licensing, and customer promises are your responsibility.

The limit is five files, 20MB each

For an Etsy instant download, you can currently attach up to five digital files. Each file can be no larger than 20MB. That distinction matters. A 34MB ZIP cannot borrow empty space from the other four slots, even if your total package is well under 100MB.

Start by deciding what the buyer actually needs at the moment of purchase. Working files, unused mockups, raw exports, and your master artwork do not belong in the customer delivery just because they happen to be in the project folder.

ZIP is an organizer first and a compressor second

Text documents, spreadsheets, and some uncompressed files can shrink noticeably inside a ZIP. High-quality JPEGs, PNGs, MP4s, and many PDFs have already been compressed by their own formats, so zipping them may save surprisingly little space. A ZIP is still valuable because it preserves folders and gives the buyer one intentional package. Just do not treat it like a magic shrinking machine.

File typeTypical ZIP savingsBetter move when it is too large
JPEG mockupsUsually smallLower export quality slightly or remove redundant views
PNG artworkOften smallUse PNG only where transparency or crisp edges matter
PDF instructionsVariesCompress embedded images, not the readable text
SVG or text filesCan be meaningfulKeep them grouped and clearly named
VideoUsually tinyRe-encode the video rather than relying on ZIP

Use five slots like five drawers

A wall-art bundle might use one slot per ratio family. A template product might use one slot for the template-access PDF, one for instructions, one for bonus assets, and one for the license. A large classroom resource might be divided into clearly named modules instead of one anonymous mega-ZIP.

The buyer should be able to guess what each file contains before opening it. Names like 01-START-HERE.pdf and 02-PRINTABLES-2x3-RATIO.zip are not exciting, but they are kind. Kind file naming cuts support questions.

Package the promise, not the entire studio

Create a clean customer folder and copy only the promised deliverables into it. Keep your seller kit separate: SEO drafts, listing images, editable masters, receipts, source prompts, and working files stay with you. This one separation prevents accidental oversharing and usually removes a surprising amount of weight.

Include a short start-here document with what is included, how to open or print it, permitted use, and a contact route. Do not bury the actual product behind six pages of branding. The instructions should reduce uncertainty, not create a ceremonial entrance.

When the real product still will not fit

Sometimes the promised files are genuinely larger than Etsy's upload allowance. Sellers often deliver a small PDF containing a private download link to a dependable file host. If you choose that approach, make the handoff obvious in the listing and in the PDF, keep access stable, test it while signed out, and re-check Etsy's current rules before publishing.

Do not surprise a buyer with an account wall, expiring link, or unexplained third-party page after purchase. The limit is Etsy's problem; the confusion should not become the buyer's problem.

Run the tired-person test

Download the exact package into a fresh folder and pretend you bought it at 11:30 at night. Can you tell where to begin? Do the filenames sort in a useful order? Does every link work? Are the printable files the promised size and color mode? Can you open the ZIP on both a computer and a phone, even if the editing itself belongs on desktop?

That five-minute check is more valuable than another paragraph of listing copy. It catches the small delivery failures that quietly turn into refunds and messages later.

Bottom line

Use Etsy's five slots intentionally, keep each file under 20MB, and design the download like a tiny onboarding experience. A good package feels obvious before the customer has to ask a question.

Frequently asked questions

What is Etsy's digital download file-size limit?

Etsy currently allows up to five files for an instant-download listing, with a maximum size of 20MB for each individual file.

Will putting my images in a ZIP make them much smaller?

Usually not if they are JPEGs, PNGs, videos, or already-compressed PDFs. ZIP is still useful for folders and organization, but large media often needs a more appropriate export setting.

Can I put a download link inside a PDF?

Many sellers use that pattern for legitimately large products. Make the arrangement clear before purchase, use stable access, test it signed out, and verify Etsy's current policies for your product type.
